HANOVER, Pa. — Sometimes you get the bracket you wanted. Sometimes you get the one that wanted you. South Western drew Cedar Cliff. On Friday afternoon, the Mustangs will travel to the home field of the defending PIAA state champions to open the District III playoffs. There is no easier way to put it: nobody on either side of the YAIAA has had a tougher first-round draw this spring.

Cedar Cliff is what every district team is trying to become. They cut the nets down last June. They’ve gone back-to-school knowing they’re the standard. Their pitching has been one of the best in District III all spring. Their lineup is patient and produces with two strikes. They play home games on a field that has more banners hanging from the fences than most high schools have in their gyms. It is, plainly, a very hard place to win a playoff game.

So how does South Western win it? They win it the way they’ve won every game that meant something this season. They lean on the stars.

Jaden Freeze. The sophomore center fielder is in the middle of a season that’s already in the school record book. He is hitting .507 with 34 hits, 27 runs scored, 4 home runs, 4 triples, and 35 stolen bases — that last number is the new South Western single-season record, having taken down Matt Paulin’s 2001 mark of 26 with games to spare. He gets on base nearly 60% of the time. Once he gets on, he scores. Cedar Cliff has not yet seen him. They will need to figure out how to keep him off second base in nine innings on Friday, and that is a problem most defenses haven’t solved. Freeze is the engine. If the Mustangs win, he is somewhere in the heart of it.

Connor Brennan. The senior pitcher and first baseman is the closest thing this team has to a stopper. 3-0 with a 1.64 ERA over 21.1 innings. Six strikeouts in his championship-game appearance, save in the league semifinal, two scoreless innings to win senior night against Central York. He has done it on the mound all year, in the moments. If Cedar Cliff scores early, Brennan is the arm Mike Resetar is going to trust to keep them within striking distance. Brennan can take the ball as a starter or come out of the bullpen with traffic on. He’s been there. He’s done it.

Seth Sullivan. The junior shortstop is 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA as a pitcher and the player who delivered the championship game-winning hit on Saturday. He’s the one who plays the deepest into the highest-leverage moments. He’s also .281 with 12 RBIs and 18 hits at the plate. The Mustangs need a complete shortstop on Friday. They have one.

Braden Wolf. The junior is hitting .354 with 15 RBIs and a team-leading 23 hits among everyday players not named Freeze. He can pitch. He triples. He drove in two of the first three runs of the championship game on Saturday. Wolf is the kind of player who quietly makes the game easier on everyone around him.

Jason Reese. The senior second baseman has been the offensive heartbeat all season. .300 with 18 hits, 4 doubles, 2 triples, 13 RBIs, 17 walks, and 15 stolen bases — one of the most disciplined hitters in the conference. He drew three walks in the championship win. Against a strikeout-pitching staff like Cedar Cliff’s, Reese’s eye is going to matter as much as anyone’s.

Noah Beil. The sophomore is 4-1 with three IP scoreless in the championship game. He’s pitched in the biggest moments — saved Senior Night, won the William Penn rout, took the ball when Smith went down against Dallastown, won the league semifinal, won the league championship. He doesn’t blink. If the Mustangs need to bridge from a starter to the end of the game, Beil is the arm.

Colton Resetar. The senior leads the team in RBIs (15) and has been a steady presence in the middle of the lineup. He may not be hitting for high average, but he’s drawn 13 walks and gets the job done with runners on base. A senior in a senior’s last shot. He’ll show up.

And the depth behind them. The stars get the ink, but no team gets to the District III playoffs on the backs of seven players. This Mustang roster is deep, and on Friday every name on the card will matter. Josiah Floyd — the right fielder hitting .261 with 17 runs scored and seven stolen bases — has been the table-turner at the bottom of the order all season. McKoy Knaub drove in the only run of the Dallastown loss two weeks ago and has six stolen bases of his own. Jake Calcitrai behind the plate. Mason Shatzer off the bench. Charlie Miller in the bullpen with a save already on his ledger and the kind of strike-throwing arm a manager wants in a tight middle inning. Carter Deane, Colby Matthews, Vaux Brooks, Daniel Connelly as pinch runners and defensive replacements who have all scored runs and turned games this year. Landon Fisher and Derek Allport as emergency arms. Parker Blake at catcher when needed. The Mustangs will need every one of them to make a run at this. They’ve done it all year. It’s the kind of team that can.

The bottom line. Cedar Cliff is the favorite. They are the favorite for a reason. They are the defending state champions, they will play in front of their crowd, and they have weapons that exceed almost every team South Western has faced this spring. The Mustangs do not win this game by trying to out-Cedar Cliff Cedar Cliff. They win it by playing their game — Freeze on the bases, Reese drawing walks, Wolf finding the gap, Brennan and Sullivan and Beil pitching with the kind of poise that won them a league title on Saturday afternoon.

A YAIAA League champion against a defending state champion. Friday afternoon, at Cedar Cliff. The Mustangs have nothing to lose and everything to prove. That’s the kind of game this team has been playing in for months. Now it’s for keeps.

EPHRATA, Pa. — It was always going to be the strangest game on the schedule. You don't win a league championship on a Saturday afternoon, lift the trophy, watch the cameras flash, and then drive ninety minutes north to play a meaningless regular-season finale forty-eight hours later without leaving a little bit of yourself back at Red Lion. The Mustangs left more than a little. They got run-ruled.

South Western fell to Ephrata 13-1 on Monday afternoon, ending the regular season the only way it could have ended for a team whose energy lives now in a different building, on a different week. Ephrata jumped on the Mustangs early — Camryn Simes hit into a productive double play that scored two runs in the first, Tyler Buckwalter doubled in another, and Ephrata had a 3-0 lead before South Western had figured out the wind direction. The Mountaineers added a run in the second on a sac fly and another in the third when an error scored a runner. By the time Ephrata hit their dugout for the bottom of the fourth, the lead was 5-1. And then the fourth happened.

Eight runs. Three hits. The kind of inning you remember if you're a teenage pitcher and you're forgotten if you're not. Noah Beil — who came in 4-0 on the year and threw three innings of championship-winning relief on Saturday — left the game with the score still close enough to dream. Charlie Miller, Landon Fisher, and Derek Allport all took the ball after him. Simes, the Ephrata starter, capped it with a three-RBI double that broke the inning into orbit. 13-1. Game called.

South Western’s lone bright spot at the plate was, of course, Jaden Freeze. The sophomore stepped in once in three plate appearances and dropped a triple — his fourth of the season — in the third inning to start the only Mustang scoring chance of the day. He also drew two walks and ran his on-base streak forward. Jason Reese drove in the one run on a sacrifice fly, and that was the offense. Simes was masterful: four innings, one hit, six strikeouts, zero earned runs. There was not much you could do.

None of this matters now. Not really. The Mustangs finish the regular season at 17-6, with the YAIAA League trophy in the case and a bracket waiting. The District III committee will set seedings later this week, and South Western will learn its opponent and location for Friday’s opening round. After what this team did on Saturday afternoon, they have earned the right to play that game on whatever field and against whatever opponent. The work’s not done. The season’s not over.

Seth Sullivan stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, his team tied 5-5 with Bermudian Springs, the season hanging on the next swing. Sullivan delivered. A single up the middle. A runner came home. 6-5, walkoff. The dugout emptied at home plate. The Mustangs are the YAIAA League Champions. The first since 2010.

Sixteen years. Think about that. The class of 2010 has kids of their own now. Coach Mike Resetar, who got his 300th career win less than two weeks ago, has waited every year of his managerial career for another shot at this. The 2024 team won their division and went home in districts. None of the teams since had quite gotten back to here. Until Saturday.

It almost didn't happen the way it was scripted. The Mustangs jumped on Bermudian Springs starter Brodie Ferrebee in the bottom of the first — Braden Wolf tripled home two runs in a swing that should have set the tone for the whole game, and Sullivan followed with an RBI single. 3-1 South Western after one. They added another in the second. Another in the third. Sitting on a 5-3 lead heading into the middle innings, the championship looked like it would just happen.

Then the seventh inning happened. Connor Brennan, who had given his team six gritty innings on the mound, ran into traffic. Teegan Byers — the Bermudian catcher who had been a problem all afternoon — singled in two more runs, and just like that, it was tied at 5-5. Brennan walked off the mound to a standing ovation having done his job: gave the team a chance. The bullpen was now responsible for the rest.

Sullivan came out of the bullpen and didn't get an out — a hit, a walk, a run charged. Noah Beil came in with the bases on fire and somehow walked into the calm. Three innings later, the sophomore had given up two hits, no runs, three strikeouts, one walk. That's the championship line. That's how you win this game. Beil moved to 3-0 on the season, and he handed his offense a tied ballgame to walk off with.

There was, of course, no question who was at the center of all of it. Jaden Freeze — the sophomore who has been authoring the season of his career — went 2-for-3 with two walks and four more stolen bases, pushing his school record total to 35 for the year. Jason Reese drew three walks, scored twice, and stole two more bases. Wolf went 2-for-4 with the early triple and two RBIs. Sullivan finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs — the second of those being the one that ended it.

Eleven walks. Seven stolen bases. Nine hits. The kind of patient, aggressive baseball that wins championships. The Mustangs made three errors of their own — and still found a way. That's the thing about this team. They've been finding a way all season.

South Western finishes the regular season and playoff run at 17-5 as the YAIAA League Champions — their first league title since 2010. The trophy goes in the case at South Western High School where it belongs, next to all the ones from the eighties and nineties and the 2010 squad that hung the last one up there. And the Mustangs aren't done yet: with the championship comes a berth into the PIAA District III playoffs. They'll get to keep playing.

RED LION, Pa. — The hardest thing in postseason baseball is sometimes just doing it twice in one day. South Western did it twice in one day. The same field. The same dugout. The same crowd that had watched the Mustangs beat Biglerville hours earlier in Round 1 settled in to watch them try to do it again in Round 2 against Kennard-Dale. They watched South Western win that one, too — 5-1.

If Round 1 belonged to Jaden Freeze and his home run, Round 2 belonged to Braden Wolf and his right arm. The junior took the ball in the most important start of his season and delivered the kind of line that wins playoff games: four innings, one hit, no runs, four strikeouts. Three walks — the only blemish — but he pitched out of every situation, and by the time he came off the mound in the fifth inning, South Western was up 3-0 and Kennard-Dale was still searching for an answer. Wolf gets the win and improves to 2-0.

If the pitching belonged to Wolf, the bat belonged to Jason Reese. The senior was the offensive engine all afternoon. He delivered a sacrifice fly in the first inning that put South Western on the board. He grounded into a fielder’s choice in the third that scored another run. And by the time the dust settled on his afternoon, Reese had driven in three of South Western’s five runs. No hit. No matter. Reese found the moments and took them.

Freeze, meanwhile, kept doing what Freeze does. Two hits in two at-bats. A triple. A walk. Three runs scored. Two more stolen bases — pushing his school-record total to 31 — and six chances handled cleanly in center field. The sophomore has been the heartbeat of this team all season, and on the biggest stage so far, he’s playing the biggest baseball. Colton Resetar tripled, walked, and drove in a run. Seth Sullivan singled, then came back out in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings to close the door — two hits, two strikeouts, no walks. Charlie Miller bridged the gap in between.

South Western didn’t commit an error. They stole three more bases — with Catcher Matthews swiping his fourth of the season. They worked five walks against a Kennard-Dale pitching staff that had nothing for them. And they did it all without their best hitter even needing a hit — Reese’s 0-for-2 with three RBIs is the kind of stat line that wins championships.

The Mustangs move to 16-5. Two playoff games. Two playoff wins. The team that took down Biglerville at lunchtime took down Kennard-Dale before dinner. Now they get the big one.

Round one of the YAIAA Division I playoffs. First swing of the rest of the season. The sophomore came through.

The Mustangs were back from the brink before they ever needed saving. South Western jumped on Biglerville starter Chase Hays in the bottom of the first — a Braden Wolf sacrifice fly drove in a run, and Connor Brennan followed with a single to left to plate another. Two-zero. Comfortable. The kind of opening you write down ahead of time.

Then the Canners answered. Braden Peterson ripped a double in the second. Chase Hays, the pitcher, then singled him in. Tied at two. Playoff baseball.

Freeze answered as only he can. The home run in the third put the Mustangs ahead. The team added one more in the fourth. From there, the game was about pitching. Noah Beil, who’s quietly become one of the more reliable arms in this rotation, gave the Mustangs four innings of two-run baseball — seven hits, no walks, two strikeouts — and walked off carrying a one-run lead and a win in his pocket. Beil now sits at 2-0 on the season.

Then it was Charlie Miller’s turn. Three innings. No hits. No runs. No walks. Two strikeouts. The save. In a playoff game, with a one-run cushion and the season on the line, Miller pitched the kind of late-game inning baseball coaches dream about — the kind that doesn’t make the highlight reels but makes the wins column.

Freeze and Seth Sullivan each finished with two hits. Jake Calcitrai, McKoy Knaub, and Brennan added singles. The Mustangs ran wild on the bases — five stolen bases as a team, with Freeze adding his 29th to extend his school record one further. Reese, Matthews, Knaub, and Sullivan each had one. The Mustangs played clean baseball, didn’t commit an error, and made Freeze — who had six fielding chances in center — the busiest defender on the field.

There’s a moment in every playoff team’s journey where you can see the team it’s about to become. South Western had that moment Thursday. The best player on the field hit the home run. And it took a sophomore in his first full varsity season to take it down. Freeze isn’t just stealing bases. He’s rewriting what’s possible at this program.

There’s a baseball game to talk about, too — and it was a good one. South Western struck first when Braden Wolf singled home a run in the top of the first. They added two more in the second on a Calcitrai walk and a Freeze sacrifice fly. They held a tidy 3-0 lead through four innings against a Dover team that wouldn’t go away easy. Then the fifth happened.

Six runs. The kind of inning that ends ballgames. Connor Brennan walked with the bases loaded to score one. Seth Sullivan drove in another with a sac fly. Jake Calcitrai singled in a third. Greg Fusillo stepped in with the bases full of trouble and ripped a single up the middle that scored the runners ahead of him. South Western actually out-hit Dallastown 7-5 on the day. Jaden Freeze went 2-for-4 and stole three more bases — and with those three, the sophomore tied Matt Paulin’s 2001 school record of 26 stolen bases in a single season, with games still left to play. He gave the Mustangs every chance, racing into scoring position again and again. Knaub drove in the only run South Western could deliver on a hit. Jason Reese, Colton Resetar, Josiah Floyd, and Braden Wolf each collected a hit. But on the afternoon, the Mustangs struck out 10 times against the Meyer-Snyder pairing, and they were just a half-step short of the timely hit that would have changed the day.

There were no errors. Connor Brennan handled three chances at first base. The Mustangs even turned a double play. They played clean baseball for seven innings against a team that was going to play for a championship win or lose. They just needed one more swing.

South Western drops to 13-5. The share of the YAIAA Division I crown they came in chasing now sits beyond the regular season’s last few innings — but it does not wash away what this group did on Monday: lose their starter to injury one pitch into the second, rewrite the gameplan in real time, and still take Dallastown to a one-out-at-a-time fight in the seventh. That’s the kind of day you remember. They travel to Dover on Tuesday. The fight, plainly, is not over.

WRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. — The better part of 30 years. That’s how long Coach Mike Resetar has been steering this ship. Twenty-seven seasons since he took the helm of the South Western Mustangs baseball program in 1999, and on Friday afternoon, the winningest manager in school history reached a milestone that will likely stand for generations to come: his 300th career victory.

And what a way to get there. The Mustangs dismantled a Red Lion team that had no answers for the onslaught, combining dominant pitching and explosive offense to put the game away early and win 16-1 in a contest that was effectively decided by the end of the third inning. The game was called after four innings due to the Mustangs' insurmountable lead, but by then Resetar had already claimed the victory that every coach dreams about.

The Mustangs scored four runs in the first, five in the second, three in the third, and four more in the fourth, accumulating 12 hits and zero errors while Red Lion managed just four hits and committed five costly mistakes. It was a complete blowout from start to finish — a statement game if there ever was one.

Jason Reese was the engine that powered the offense, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and recording both a triple and a double on the afternoon. The junior also drew a walk and had a sacrifice hit, showcasing the kind of all-around offensive production that this South Western lineup has been known for all season. Reese’s triple in the third scored two runs and his double in the fourth scored one, making him one of the architects of the early offensive surge.

Braden Wolf was right there alongside Reese, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and also recording a triple. It was the kind of aggressive, confident baseball that has become the trademark of this 13-4 Mustang squad.

South Western’s record improves to 13-4 with the dominant victory. The team will look to build on this momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. South Western Varsity Mustangs defeated William Penn 16-1 on Tuesday thanks in part to 11 runs in the third inning. Seth Sullivan singled, scoring one run, Parker Blake singled, scoring one run, Jaden Freeze was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Colton Resetar singled, scoring one run, Charlie Miller singled, scoring three runs, Blake Wilhelm singled, scoring two runs, an error scored one run, and Vaux Brooks singled, scoring one run.

HANOVER, Pa. — If you want to know what this South Western team is made of, rewind to the fifth inning on Monday afternoon. The Mustangs had built a comfortable 4-0 lead through four innings on Senior Night. The crowd was relaxed. The seniors were soaking it in. And then Central York dropped a five-spot in the top of the fifth to rip the lead away, 5-4, just like that.

A lot of teams fold right there. Not these Mustangs. Not on Senior Night.

South Western answered immediately in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to retake the lead 7-5, and Connor Brennan — the senior first baseman celebrating Senior Night — was at the center of all of it. Brennan went 2-for-2 with two RBIs at the plate, including a clutch two-run single in the fifth that put the Mustangs back on top. Then he walked to the mound and threw two hitless innings with two strikeouts to slam the door and earn the save. On Senior Night. You can’t script it any better than that.

South Western built its early cushion the old-fashioned way — patience and pressure. A passed ball scored the first run in the second. Jason Reese singled home a run in the third. Braden Wolf collected a hit and scored twice, and Ethan Smith singled and drew a walk while also scoring. By the time Central York starter Kirby Eidson walked off the mound after four innings, the Mustangs had put up four runs on four hits and three walks.

Brennan made sure it stayed that way. His sixth and seventh innings were masterful — no hits, no walks, two punchouts, and a whole lot of Senior Night swagger. The kid earned every bit of that save.

South Western is 11-4 now and still very much in the hunt for the YAIAA Division I title. They welcome William Penn on Tuesday, and if Monday was any indication, this team isn’t just surviving adversity anymore — they’re thriving in it. Waynesboro sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, piling up eight runs on five hits and two South Western errors to blow the doors off a game the Mustangs never had a chance to play on their terms. The final: Waynesboro 12, South Western 2, in five innings.

Senior Colton Resetar drew the start on the mound and was greeted rudely. Knepper tripled to lead off, Jenkins singled him home, and before Resetar could locate anything remotely close to the zone, the Indians had runners everywhere. Bowers ripped a two-run single, Eaton doubled home two more, and Knepper capped the carnage with another two-run knock. Two wild pitches and a pair of Mustang errors turned a bad inning into a catastrophe. Resetar recorded just two outs and was charged with eight runs — only two earned — on five hits.

Derek Allport entered in relief but found no respite. The senior right-hander surrendered five hits and two more runs in the second as Waynesboro extended the lead to 10-0 before South Western had taken a swing in the batter's box with any real momentum.

The Mustangs finally scratched across a pair of runs in the top of the second without recording a hit — pure fight. Connor Brennan drew a walk, Ethan Smith was hit by a pitch, and Seth Sullivan took one off the body as well to load the bases. Parker Blake worked a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and McKoy Knaub grounded into a fielder's choice that plated Smith. It wasn't pretty, but it got two across.

That was all the Mustangs could muster. Waynesboro reliever Chance Hall entered in the second inning and was masterful, spinning 3.2 hitless innings — allowing just one single to Jason Reese — while retiring the final 10 batters he faced. South Western managed just one hit in the game.

The bright spot was sophomore Charlie Miller, who mopped up with 2.1 innings of damage control, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out one. It was Miller's first extended varsity pitching appearance, and he showed the kind of composure the coaching staff will remember when the calendar turns to May.

Knepper was the story for Waynesboro, going 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Bowers drove in three. The Indians pounded out 13 hits and never let the Mustangs breathe.

In the bottom of the first, Braden Wolf grounded out to the right side to plate the game's first run and stake South Western to an early 1-0 lead. Northeastern answered with a run on a wild pitch in the second to knot things at one apiece, but the Mustangs had a quick response.

Colton Resetar stepped up in the bottom of the second and laced a two-RBI single that pushed the lead to 3-1 and chased any thought of Northeastern settling in at the plate. The senior designated hitter finished with two RBIs on the day and continues to deliver in big spots early in the season.

Northeastern clawed back with two runs in the top of the third — a double by Bissinger and a single by Brayden Ford doing the damage — to pull even at 3-3. But Smith answered immediately. Leading off the bottom of the third, he launched a triple that scored two runners and put the Mustangs back in command. A walk to McKoy Knaub later in the inning helped extend the cushion to 6-3 as South Western batted around in a three-run frame.

That's where things stalled. Northeastern reliever P. Shelly entered in the third inning and proceeded to shut South Western down the rest of the way, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. The Mustangs, who had been aggressive and opportunistic through three innings, went silent over the final four.

Meanwhile, Northeastern chipped away. Bissinger — who tormented the Mustangs all afternoon — crushed a solo home run to left field in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-4. Then, in the seventh, the Bobcats put together a two-run rally highlighted by a sacrifice bunt from Brandt Johnson and a walk drawn by Ford to knot the game at 6-6. Brennan surrendered a single to L. Husser to break up the no-hit bid in the seventh but struck out two to preserve the shutout in South Western's 4-0 road victory to open YAIAA Division I play.

Freeze set the tone early, working around a leadoff walk in the first to strand the runner and keep the Rockets off the board. He hit a pair of batters in the middle innings and walked four total, but Spring Grove never came close to solving him — zero hits on 95 pitches. He leaned heavily on his off-speed stuff, generating swings and misses at a dominant clip with 54 of his 95 pitches going for strikes.

The Mustangs gave Freeze all the run support he needed in the top of the first. Freeze led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and stole third. Courtesy runner Vaux Brooks then entered for Freeze at third, and with Connor Brennan at the plate, a passed ball allowed Brooks to race home and put South Western up 1-0. Brennan struck out to end the inning, but the damage was done.

The lead swelled to 3-0 in the fourth when Jason Reese drew a walk and stole second. Brennan followed with a walk of his own, and Braden Wolf delivered the biggest swing of the day — a two-RBI single that plated both runners and gave the Mustangs a commanding cushion.
